The Buganda Kingdom has launched its first fully constructed medical facility, Kabaka Muteesa II Hospital, in Busimbi, Mityana District, marking a significant milestone in improving rural healthcare access. The hospital began administering medication on August 6, 2025, addressing critical health needs in a region long underserved by quality medical services.

The state-of-the-art facility features specialized units for maternal and child health, infectious diseases, and emergency care, equipped with modern diagnostic tools. Funded by the Buganda Kingdom and local partners, the hospital aims to serve over 50,000 residents annually, reducing the burden on urban centers like Mulago National Referral Hospital. It also integrates traditional healing practices, reflecting Buganda’s cultural heritage while adhering to modern medical standards.

“This hospital is a testament to our commitment to uplifting the health of our people,” said a Buganda Kingdom spokesperson. The facility employs 120 healthcare workers, including locally trained nurses, and offers subsidized services to low-income families. Telemedicine services connect patients to specialists in Kampala, enhancing care delivery.

The opening aligns with Uganda’s broader health sector goals to achieve universal health coverage by 2030, supported by a Shs2.4 trillion ($630 million) health budget for 2025/26. Challenges remain, including staffing shortages and supply chain logistics, but the hospital sets a model for community-driven healthcare initiatives in rural Uganda.
