The SophiA project, a groundbreaking initiative by Uganda’s Ministry of Health, has upgraded Buvuma Health Centre IV, serving 120,000 residents across 52 islands, with sustainable off-grid solutions. Launched in early 2025, the project introduces solar-powered medical equipment, water purification systems, and digital record-keeping, addressing the facility’s isolation from the national grid.

Buvuma, previously reliant on inconsistent power, now boasts a 24/7 operational surgical theatre and maternity ward, reducing maternal mortality by 20% in pilot phases. The project, funded by a $2 million grant from international partners, includes solar refrigerators for vaccine storage and telemedicine kiosks connecting patients to specialists in Kampala. “This is a model for rural healthcare innovation,” said Dr. Daniel Kyabayinze, Director of Public Health.

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s 2025/26 health budget, which allocates Shs721 billion ($188 million) for healthcare supplies and digital infrastructure. Challenges include maintaining equipment in humid conditions and training staff on new technologies. The SophiA project’s success is set to inspire similar upgrades in other remote regions, supporting Uganda’s goal of equitable healthcare access by 2030.
