Electoral Commission Launches National Voters’ Register Update Ahead of 2026 Elections

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the General Update of the National Voters’ Register, scheduled from 20th January to 10th February 2025.

This critical exercise, forming part of the roadmap to the 2026 General Elections and referenda, aims to ensure that all eligible voters are prepared to participate in free and fair elections. The update will enable Ugandans to:

  • Register as voters upon reaching 18 years of age.
  • Update their polling locations if they have moved to a new residence.
  • Confirm personal details to ensure accuracy in the register.
  • Assign polling stations for newly registered voters.

Justice Simon Byabakama, EC Chairperson, emphasised the significance of the exercise, highlighting its role in promoting inclusivity and transparency. “For regular free and fair elections, we must maintain an accurate and up-to-date voters’ register. This update is an opportunity for all eligible Ugandans to make their voices count,” he said.

The update forms part of a broader electoral roadmap leading to the 2026 elections. Key upcoming activities include:

  • Display of the National Voters’ Register: After the update, the register will be displayed for public scrutiny, allowing citizens to report corrections or objections.
  • Nomination of Candidates: Political parties and independent candidates will formally declare their candidacies and present manifestos to the public.
  • Voting: Citizens will head to the polls in early 2026 to elect leaders at various levels, including the presidency, parliament, and local government positions.

The exercise will be conducted at designated update centers across the country. Citizens are urged to visit these centers with valid identification documents, such as a National ID or any official proof of identity, to facilitate the process.

To encourage participation, the Electoral Commission has launched a nationwide public sensitisation campaign under the theme #ECRoadmap2026. This initiative includes community outreach programs, media campaigns, and stakeholder engagements to mobilize the public and raise awareness of their electoral responsibilities.

Justice Byabakama called on Ugandans to seize the opportunity to ensure an accurate and reliable voters’ register. “Let us work together to build a credible foundation for the 2026 elections,” he said.

With the 2026 elections approaching, the update underscores Uganda’s commitment to democratic principles, empowering all eligible citizens to actively participate in shaping the nation’s future.
