{"id":792,"date":"2025-08-24T12:23:12","date_gmt":"2025-08-24T09:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newsnest.co.ug\/?p=792"},"modified":"2025-08-24T12:23:13","modified_gmt":"2025-08-24T09:23:13","slug":"kilmar-abrego-garcia-faces-deportation-to-uganda-by-us-government","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newsnest.co.ug\/?p=792","title":{"rendered":"Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda Faces Deportation To Uganda By US Government"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Less than 24 hours after his release, US authorities have informed Kilmar \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda that he may be deported to Uganda, following his refusal to accept a plea deal in a pending criminal case, his lawyers say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Attorneys for Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda say he declined an offer to plead guilty to human smuggling charges in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica &#8211; a deal proposed after it became clear he would be released from custody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His lawyers now accuse the US government of trying to &#8220;coerce&#8221; him to plead guilty by threatening to re-deport him &#8220;halfway across the world&#8221; to Uganda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Salvadoran national was mistakenly deported to El Salvador in March, and then brought back to face criminal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Kilmar Abrego Garcia to be deported after refusing plea offer <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/I4PjB5lzNZ\">https:\/\/t.co\/I4PjB5lzNZ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1MiPL1dgUQ\">pic.twitter.com\/1MiPL1dgUQ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; New York Post (@nypost) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nypost\/status\/1959295741752443082?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 23, 2025<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The deal to be sent to Costa Rica was offered on Thursday after it became clear Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda would likely be freed from a Tennessee jail on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Costa Rican government agreed to accept him as a refugee and provide him legal status there, a letter from a Costa Rican official included in the legal filing says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Abrego Garcia would only be deported to Costa Rica after serving his sentence on the smuggling charges, according to the court filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His attorneys now say that upon Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda&#8217;s release from federal custody, they were informed of the government&#8217;s intention to deport him to Uganda &#8211; a country with which he has no known ties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The DOJ, DHS, and ICE are using their collective powers to force Mr. Abrego to choose between a guilty plea followed by relative safety, or rendition to Uganda, where his safety and liberty would be under threat,&#8221; the lawyers wrote in the filing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lawyers say Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda has until Monday morning to accept a plea in exchange for deportation to Costa Rica, &#8220;or else that offer will be off the table forever&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was not immediately clear whether he was considering the government offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now in Maryland with his family, Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda is scheduled to appear in a Baltimore immigration court on Monday. If a judge approves the government&#8217;s request, he could face deportation within days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The US reached bilateral deportation agreements with Honduras and Uganda as part of its crackdown on illegal immigration,\u00a0according to documents obtained by the BBC&#8217;s US partner CBS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This is a temporary arrangement with conditions including that individuals with criminal records and unaccompanied minors will not be accepted,&#8221; Bagiire Vincent Waiswa, permanent secretary to the Ugandan foreign ministry, said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Uganda also prefers that individuals from African countries shall be the ones transferred to Uganda.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr \u00c1brego Garc\u00eda&#8217;s deportation case has become a fixture of the Trump administration&#8217;s crackdown on immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was deported to his native El Salvador in March, and initially kept in the notorious Cecot prison. But after US government officials acknowledged he was deported due to an &#8220;administrative error&#8221;, a judge ordered the administration to &#8220;facilitate&#8221; his return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was returned to the United States in early June and sent to the state of Tennessee, where he was charged in a human smuggling scheme.
